According
to Hollywood, it doesn't.
Alexander
Wright: "American film producers are constantly telling me that
Britain possesses the most capacious reservoir of acting in the
English-speaking world compared to which, New York is but a puddle
and Los Angeles a spittle"
But
then Hollywood has the money to attract the best actors from all over
the world.
Except
that it doesn't. Many British actors refuse to answer Hollywood's
call in spite of the money and I'm sure that is also true for other
countries as well.
But
then there's Elstree Studios.
This
is effectively Hollywood come to Britain. Elstree is repsonsible for
some very American movies:
- "Star Wars" episodes 1 to 6
- The "Indiana Jones" films
- various Muppet Adventures including "Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth"
- "Superman"
- "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Although
it also does plenty of homegrown stuff that is instantly recognisable
as British, it is effectively a colony or beachhead of Hollywood.
So
I guess the answer is: yes. If not Hollywood itself, then Hollywood's
money gets the best actors.
