People
invest in movie for one of two paybacks:
- They will make a profit
- They will get something else of value out of the experience
Your
script offers neither so don't try to sell the script. You'll just be
wasting everyone's time - including yours.
So,
you have to do one of two things:
- Prove to your investors that they're guaranteed to make a profit - almost impossible unless you have a significant name attached and even then it's iffy
- Look at a layered approach where they will definitely get other benefits for their money and if they make a profit as well then that's a bonus.
So
you must ask yourself
"What
real benefits can I offer an investor that they will get whether the
film makes a penny or not?"
Such
benefits include
- Tax breaks
- Product placement/advertising
- Seeing their name on the credits
- Calling themselves "Producer"
- Having a part
- Seeing a loved one take their first steps into stardom
- Having lunch with a pretty actress/actor
In
short, you must start thinking about your film as a currency in its
own right.
Make
no mistake: films are sexy. The idea of fame and recognition is sexy.
The idea of other people paying to see your face on a big screen is
sexy.
So
use it.
Stop
limiting yourself by thinking only in terms of money.
